Histochemical Studies on the Red, White and Intermediate Muscle Fibers of Some Skeletal Muscles Iii. Histochemical Demonstration of Oxidative Enzymes, Phosphorylase and Glycogen in Respiratory Muscle Fibers

چکیده
1) Three different types of muscle fibers were clearly distinguished in the intercostal muscles and the diaphragm of human, cat and rat by histochemical demonstration of oxidative enzymes, phosphorylase and glycogen. 2) The intercostal muscles and diaphragm each presented dissimilar patterns of the muscle fibers. The diaphragm did not show any definite correlation between the diameter and the histochemical reaction of muscle fibers but its red fibers indicated a more intense uptake of Nitro-BT formazan deposits in the subsarcolemmal region. In this conection, the relationship between the motor innervation and histochemical evaluation of the diaphragm was described. 3) Phosphorylase and glycogen showed reciprocal reactions to the oxidative enzyme activity. They were generally high in large fibers but low in small fibers, and moderate in intermediate fibers. ∗PMID: 4225847 [PubMed indexed for MEDLINE] Copyright c ©OKAYAMA UNIVERSITY MEDICAL SCHOOL Acta Med. Histochemical And Electron Microscopic Diagnosis Of Mitochondrial Myopathy: The First Case Report From Iran
Muscle tissue, skeletal muscle as well as cardiac muscle, is commonly affected in mitochondrial disorders. One explanation for this observation is that muscle tissue has a high-energy demand and therefore is more sensitive to a deficiency of mitochondrial energy production than some other tissues. In mitochondrial disorders, skeletal muscle tissue may be affected primarily by defective respi...

From the histochemical study of the intercostal muscles of cat, the following results were obtained. 1. Three different types of muscle fibers have been clearly distinguished in intercostal muscles by histochemical demonstration of succinic dehydrogenase; namely, the white fibers are stained faintly, while the red fibers deep blue and the intermediate fibers purple or bluish purple. 2. The diff...

The distribution and characterization of the fibers of normal and denervated red and white muscles of the albino rat are reported in this study. Histochemical procedures for succinic dehydrogenase, lipides, adenosinetriphosphatase, esterase, and glycogen were utilized to differentiate muscle fibers, and these methods facilitated the study of the distribution of fiber types within whole muscle. ...
